Thought I'd share a little of our "FARM LIFE". Last night we were out wandering our meager 3 acres searching for armadillo. I really do not like armadillos. Please let me reiterate that statement. I REALLY DO NOT LIKE ARMADILLOS!!!!! I have planned & executed the demise of many and have recently been searching out one in particular that has been destroying my yard. For those of you unfamiliar with the habits of armadillos let me share with you their destructive habits.
holes!!!
Holes!!!
HOLES!!!!!!
holes!!!
Holes!!!
HOLES!!!!!!
They destroy the grass (& in some places weeds)and leave deep holes that trip you up and turn your lawn into an obstacle course not to mention it is unsightly!
Well last night Walt caught him in the act!!!! He came in to inquire if I want the pleasure of sending the little digger to his grave or should he take care of him. Well, allowing my baser human nature to emerge, I piped up " I'd love to shoot him!!", I grabbed my trusty .22 and headed out the door. The nite was beautiful..... moon shining brightly and stars twinkling like diamonds. We wandered out behind Jonathan's "apartment" looking to see where "Digger" had gone..... the little bugger was under JD's place!!! Which meant to shoot him I'd have to get down on the ground and work out a belly shot. Folks..... since my knee replacement let me tell you getting down on the ground & crawling around is NOT my forte. So, with much reluctance I gave my beloved rifle over to my husband..... a good shot but not the ace I am (LOL). At least he can get down on his knees. But hey look at the shot he had to execute...
The armadillo was 1/3 of the way under the bldg., almost directly under the window. Walt was closer to the bldg than this photo, really only about 5ft out but....... he did not nail the bugger. :(
That skeester shot out the other side and ran off back through the woods. My evening was spoiled. I was looking forward to being able to repair the damage done to the yard and have it looking good again...... but now we will be spending more nites trying to catch him again.
On a lighter note check out how my garden is growing..... I have planted cucumbers and bell peppers and they are doing well. We have 3 hills of watermelon that I have placed wet newspaper around to keep the weeds at bay.
We planted a pear and 2 peach trees last year, and were surprised to actually get peaches from one of the trees. This year that tree is loaded!!
We will be harvesting in a day or two!! Can't wait.
The other tree we planted that year did not produce but one peach and so far this year looks like ....
we'll get none...
We planted 2 more peach trees early this spring. One has just bloomed but has few leaves...???? I'm not sure what is going on with the tree .... it is a later producer but it just does not seem "right" to me. I'm not sure if it is healthy....
The second tree planted this spring is looking ok.... It has 3 little peaches and appears to be healthy.
Tree one Tree two
This is our pomagrante.
We have Kiwi.
The male plant is in the center flanked by 2 females
2 blueberry bushes, this one is loaded with berries the other is much smaller and has no berries.
We also have an olive tree. I have lots of herbs, pablano & jalpeno peppers, & tomatoes in pots all around the back door/ grill area.
Some of the herbs are: 3 kinds of basil, spearmint, peppermint, chocolate mint, rosemary, thyme, chives, flat leaf & curly leaf parsley. Three types of tomato, a roma, a grape & an heirloom. I plan on adding a couple more tomatoes and oh yeah some pole beans. That is enough to keep Walt busy (LOL)
We have created a new chicken run and have the new coop 1/2 built as of tonite(no pics of the coop yet.... will add those later.) The original PVC moveable "duck" cage is not working for the ducks & chickens. The ducks are pecking the poor bantams .... I am afraid Mrs Quack has pecked out the bantam hen's, Pretty Mama, eye. I have been doctoring it but it has been swollen shut since Saturday morning. We have already moved the batams over to the new run even though we don't have the coop complete just to keep the ducks away from them. The big chickens arn't so persecuted by them as the poor bantams.
Well I will end this missive now. Don't want to run you off due to boredom. Farm life is only interesting for short bouts I fear, and I do want you to come back and read some more one day.
Will work on blogging at least once a week.....
