Sunday, June 9, 2013, Nathan turned 5. Walt & I joined everyone: Wendy, and her crew - Meg - Dalton - Brandon - Nathan the Birthday Boy and Amber and hers, Garrett - Caleb - Jacob along with Chic, Win, Mona & Charleigh down at Chic's place on the river. They were camping out for a couple of nights. They had been at our house Saturday night... the after showers from Tropical Storm Andrea (Thurs -Friday we had gotten 4 1/4" rain) were still intermittent but not a real deterrent. The river was up but we had a great time celebrating Nathan's birthday.
This is the same lane Charleigh took Dalton for a walk on in the picture just above.
Water was thigh high on Megan (5'9") in several places!
Check out her shorts in the last picture.
Under the cabin, bocce ball court behind slightly lower than under cabin. |
We ate cupcakes, opened presents, played with swords & light sabers, had a modified kind-a bocce ball (ring and ball) competition ~YOU ROCK MONA~!!! Had a ton of fun. The deer/horse flies were out in force as well as the skeeters. Then Walt & I peeled out; a carpenter bee stung my neck and I needed to get home to my epi-pen... tho I am "bee-sting" allergic, it is actually only wasps/yellow jackets that I react to, sweat bees/bumble/carpenter bees don't usually cause a bad reaction, since you can not be to cautious, and I have had some pretty severe reactions to stings resulting in hospital visits, I wanted to be past the 2 miles of dirt road with deep puddles and closer to home! Do not ask why the epi-pen was at home! It is now in the glove box. Fortunately the sting did not react severely - just a large welt that itched like crazy but was painful to touch. Cleared up in 4 days.
But all was well and we left them having a great time....
On our journey home some more of the rain clouds moved in and provided a few more heavy showers. Be aware now, the river was up a considerable bit when we were there and was running swift, but not what you'd consider flood stage though.
This is such a "sweet series" of pictures of the birthday boy enjoying his cupcake!
oh yum!
Playing "root-ball" sort-a like Bocce Ball/horse shoe combo |
after game hand shake!! looks like she was crowing a little!
Charleigh taking Dalton for a walk out to the road....
you will see this lane again a little later in the blog....
So.... they cooked out and had a fun evening .... there were thunder storms & rain all around but nothing really bad at the cabin. Nite Nite. They got up the next morning and the water was up... up covering the lower deck. The kids actually swam within the rails on the lower deck. Amber suggested they move the cars out to the paved road but Chic & Win felt things were OK - felt it not necessary yet. And the water continued to rise..... after lunch the water was in the BocceBall court.... Amber & Wendy finally INSISTED that they move their vans to higher ground....all the way out to the highway(2miles) and as the water was up above the sensors and the floor level .... not a moment too soon!!! (The under carriage protective shield was ripped off Wendy's van & the sensors no longer beeped but only squeaked constantly on Amber's van) Chic & Win drove them back in the truck.... leaving the truck about a 1/2 mile up the road from the cabin. Their was no life threatening flood surge but the water continued to rise ... when they woke up Tues morning the water was just above ankle deep under the cabin.... They had to canoe out to the vehicles!!This is the same lane Charleigh took Dalton for a walk on in the picture just above.
Check out her shorts in the last picture.
What an adventure....(the river rising about 5 FEET per day!)they will get to tell their own kids about it one day!!!
Hope you enjoyed a cuppa as you read the little saga.... May God Bless you and come join us at the river someday soon! :) Signe
